Game 1 Preview: Western Conference Finals - Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers - 03/17/2010
The Western Conference finals kicks off Monday, May 17, 2010 with the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Phoenix Suns Game 1 at the Staples Center, Downtown, LA, 6:00 p.m., PT on TNT.
With the Suns you have Amare Stoudemire and Channing Frye matched up against the Laker players; Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom, a line-up which favors the L.A Lakers. And you have a mastermind match-up between Lakers coach Phil Jackson and Suns coach Alvin Gentry. The Phoenix Suns are clearly the underdog going into the series.
You also have the Derek Fisher vs. Steve Nash match-up, but it will take more than grit to beat the Lakers, especially when you are playing against Kobe Bryant, arguably the best player in the NBA (Lebron James fans will disagree, but are the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Conference finals?)
Back to the Fisher vs. Nash match-up, it is interesting to note that both players are in their mid 30's (Fisher is 35 and Nash is 36) and playing the point guard position, still with the same intensity and skill as when they were younger, that's what makes the match-up so exciting.
Both are veterans, but difference is, Derek Fisher is a 4-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers and Nash has yet to win one.
Fisher also excels under pressure especially in tight situations where he usually makes points, that shows he is unaffected by the pressure, just like his teammate Kobe Bryant. While, Nash is one of the best in assists, he knows where to pass the ball and is an amazing play maker. Nash's strongest assets are his speed and court vision, he knows where to pass the ball by finding the right openings.
These are the factors to be reckon with on both players and their teams, but just like any sport the underdog has a chance to prevail.
Who do you have winning the Lakers or the Suns?
