Recap: Knicks 90, Lakers 100 - 11/25/09
Here's a tip for NBA teams that come to Los Angeles for a game with the Lakers: don't stay in Santa Monica . Or leave an extra hour for the bus trip to Staples Center .
The Lakers left the New York Knicks for dead on the proverbial side of the road in a 100-90 win Tuesday night. They piled on the points and led by 25 in the second half but the Knicks still had breath in that collective body.
It resulted in Lakers coach Phil Jackson re-inserting the starters in the fourth quarter to finish the job. Lamar Odom only shot 2 for 9 from the field and didn't seem to be in the flow of the offense. When that happens the rest of the second unit gets off kilter and it showed.
Apparently the Knicks began their night off kilter. It was reported that they reached Staples Center a bit less than an hour prior to game time after experiencing what isn't unusual traffic issues on the Santa Monica freeway. They hung tough for a while, even tying the score in the early part of the second quarter but the home team pulled away using its size in the low post.
Los Angeles gathered in a total of 60 rebounds as the Knicks stayed with their perimeter, jump-shooting game. Those shots were falling early and again in the fourth quarter with the Lakers second unit on the floor, until Jackson pulled the bench players. The Knicks were led by Nate Robinson off the bench and forward Wilson Chandler who each scored 15 points.
The height advantage made the Knicks easy pickings for Laker scorers as well as rebounders. Bynum had 17 in 32 minutes, Kobe poured in 34, Artest 17 and even Derek Fisher who had been struggling to find his shot got into the act with a stat line of 12, four assists and six rebounds.
Next up for the Lakers is a quick trip up to the Bay Area to face the Warriors on Saturday and the Knicks continue their West Coast swing in Sacramento tonight and the Nuggets on Friday.
