Heading back on the road to a city where they've had little success lately was daunting enough for the Los Angeles Lakers. Now they'll have to do it without their starting center.

Kwame Brown is expected to be sidelined several weeks with a severely sprained left ankle for the Lakers, who visit the resurgent Sacramento Kings on Thursday.

Brown was hurt in the third quarter of Sunday's 104-94 win over the Philadelphia 76ers and underwent a CT scan and MRI exam Monday, both of which were negative for a fracture. Averaging 8.7 points this season and second on the team with 6.6 rebounds per game, Brown will be reassessed in 10 days to two weeks, according to team spokesman John Black.

"He's in a lot of pain," Black said.

Brown's absence is another blow to the Lakers (20-11), who are already without center Chris Mihm and forward Lamar Odom. Mihm is out for the season following right ankle surgery and Odom is expected to miss another two to three weeks with a sprained knee ligament.

Andrew Bynum will likely start in Brown's place Thursday, but Lakers star Kobe Bryant said the injury leaves a big hole.

"Obviously, we're going to be missing a huge punch inside, so guys will have to step up and meet that challenge and plug in that void," Bryant said. "Defensively is where Kwame really gives us a big charge, because he's so versatile and quick and can cover a lot of small players."

Bryant did his best to fill some of that void Sunday, scoring 35 points on 15-of-22 shooting and recording eight rebounds and six assists. That followed a season-high 58-point performance in a loss to the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday.

Bryant , the Western Conference player of the month for December, averaged 36.3 points against the Kings (14-15) last season as the teams split four meetings.

These Pacific Division rivals have yet to play this season. The Lakers have dropped six of their last seven games in Sacramento, including three straight.

They'll face a Sacramento Kings squad that has won four of five games following a 2-9 stretch.

A game after failing to score a point, Ron Artest had a career-high 39 points Tuesday to lead the Kings to a 112-100 victory over the New York Knicks. The Kings forward has struggled with inconsistent play in his first full season with the team, but was dominant in the victory, hitting 15-of-22 from the field while grabbing eight rebounds and making five steals.

"Finally," said Artest, who is averaging 15.9 points on 39.8 percent shooting this season. "You just have to stay with it, stay focused. A lot of people have been saying I couldn't shoot the ball. I had a bad year or a bad season (shooting), but I figured I would come around. I've been working hard. Things just haven't been going my way."

Things are going Mike Bibby's way, as Sacramento's point guard is averaging 21.8 points in his last four games - 4.7 above his season average - and he leads the team with 6.0 assists per game.

Kings leading scorer Kevin Martin was held to 12 points Tuesday, his second-worst total of the season, after being kept on the bench for the final 17:56. He is averaging just 6.3 points in seven career games against the Lakers.

The Kings , in the middle of a season-high five-game homestand, are 10-7 at Arco Arena this season and are looking to match a season-high four-game winning streak there.

The Lakers are playing on the road for the seventh time in eight games. They are 6-7 away from home this season.
