If the Los Angeles Lakers hope to snap their recent slump, they'll have to do it on the road.
The Lakers open a season-high eight-game road trip on Tuesday when they visit the New York Knicks.
Los Angeles (27-17) has dropped four of its last five games, including Sunday's 96-94 overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs. That came after a 106-97 overtime loss to Charlotte Bobcatson Friday.
"We played a great game," coach Phil Jackson said Sunday. "We competed with a good team and we carried the day. We probably carried the lead for 45 minutes in that game. That's the way to play - we just didn't finish it the right way."
Los Angeles has dropped four of its last five on the road and is 8-11 away from home this season. The Lakers will not return to Staples Center until Feb. 13 to meet the New York Knicks.
The Knicks (19-27), though, haven't exactly dominated on their home court, going just 11-13 at Madison Square Garden and losing three of their last five there.
New York coach Isiah Thomas said guarding Kobe Bryant - who had 31 points, six rebounds and seven assists against the Spurs - will be among his team's biggest challenges. Bryant has averaged 26.2 in career nine games in New York and is scoring 28.4 per contest this season.
"There's really no answer to Kobe," Thomas told the team's official Web site. "We'll try to do some things but I'm sure none of them will really work. There are few guys who've come along where you can talk about Jordan and him in the same breath. He is one of them."
Jamal Crawford will likely guard Bryant for much of the game. Crawford scored 17 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 107-105 loss at Milwaukee Bucks, their fifth defeat in seven games overall. Crawford was coming off a career-best 52-point effort against Miami Heat on Friday.
"I think the first game after a big game like that is probably the hardest," Crawford said. "My teammates encouraged me to stay with it. They weren't typically bad shots, but they just weren't falling."
Eddy Curry, who averages a team-best 19.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest, returned after missing a game with a sore left calf and had 15 points.
"I'm stiff and not quite where I want to be," said Curry, who added he won't miss another game because of the injury.
The Lakers, meanwhile, were without forward Luke Walton on Sunday. Walton, who sprained his right ankle the loss to the Bobcats and will likely miss at least a week. Center Kwame Brown also has an injured ankle and hasn't played since Dec. 31, but hopes to return sometime during the road trip.
Los Angeles has won three straight in the series since a 117-115 overtime defeat in New York on Feb. 28, 2005.
