The second-highest scoring game of
Kobe Bryant's career helped the
Los Angeles Lakers end a long losing streak their last time out. Los Angeles looks to build off that victory
Sunday when it hosts the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves.
Bryant scored 65 points on 23-for-39 shooting and went 8-for-12 from 3-point range Friday as Los Angeles (34-32) snapped a season-high seven-game skid with a 116-111 overtime win over Portland. Bryant scored a career-high 81 points in a victory over the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006, and Friday's performance topped his previous season high of 58 in a loss to the Charlotte Bobcats on Dec. 29. It was the third time in his career he scored 60 or more points in a game. Bryant , though, wasn't concerned about his personal accomplishment.
"My daughter is outside waiting for me, and I'm sure she doesn't give a damn about what just happened. She just wants to watch Care Bears," said Bryant , who scored 33 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. "I'm just happy we won. We needed to get this one. We just had to win this game and get back on track, just for a morale standpoint."
The Lakers, who had lost 13 of 16 before Friday, have a chance to build off the victory with their next five games against teams with losing records, starting Sunday versus Minnesota (28-36), which continues to fade in the Western Conference playoff race.
"I had to come out aggressive and assert myself, just because our confidence was a little shaky," said Bryant , who had 40 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in a 117-107 double-overtime loss at Minnesota on March 6. "We needed a breakout game. And it's my job as a leader to kind of read what we need as a team. And sometimes, me taking over games like this instills confidence in us all." Los Angeles is 11-4 all-time when Bryant tops the 50-point mark. He is among the league leaders with 29.7 points per game. Despite its poor play over the last month, Los Angeles is still in the playoff race in the West, and now has
Lamar Odom back in the lineup.
Lamar Odom played 45 minutes and had 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists Friday in his second game after missing five with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Minnesota is competing for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, but lost 106-86 at
Golden State on Friday to fall to 3-9 since the All-Star break.
Despite 19 points and 13 rebounds from Kevin Garnett and 20 points and seven assists from rookie Randy Foye, the Minnesota Timberwolves scored below their season average of 96.2 points for the fourth straight game.
Making its second stop on a five-game road trip Sunday, Minnesota remains one of the NBA's worst road teams at 9-23 and will look to snap a nine-game losing streak away from home. Even though the Wolves are struggling, Randy Wittman, who replaced Dwane Casey as coach in January, has received a vote of confidence from team owner Glen Taylor and players like Garnett, who had 26 points and 17 rebounds against the Lakers on March 6. "It's nice that you have players that feel that way," Wittman said. "I've got great confidence in who I am, and doing the job. That's what I'm going to stay focused on." The Lakers have won two of three meetings with the Minnesota Timberwolves this season, and are 21-4 at home in the series since March 1994.
