Luke Walton was no stranger to basketball being the son of Bill Walton former NBA player. Playing for their schools, Luke Walton's three brothers: Adam, Chris, and Nathan also were involved in the sport of basketball. On his arm, Luke has a tattoo representing his brothers and him playing basketball.
In 1998, Luke Walton graduated from the University of San Diego High School, later he enrolled in the University of Arizona where he majored in Family Studies. While attending the University of Arizona, Luke Walton played under coach Lute Olson with the Wildcats. In the 2003 NBA Draft, Luke Walton was selected in the second round with the third pick by the Lakers making him the 32nd overall. Luke Walton averaged as a 5th year senior, 0.9 steals, 5.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 10.8 points. As a junior, Luke Walton's averages were even better with 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 0.6 blocks a game, and 6.3 assists.
Luke Walton has been admired by his skills and fundamentals of basketball, as a timid player, his game is not flashy and does not make highlights often, but he is rather recognized as a great team player. Under Phil Jackson, Luke Walton's great passing skills brought the young star success in the triangle of offense. However, to some critics Luke Walton's constant passing instead of shooting slows down the team's offense in several occasions. In the season of 2004-05, Luke Walton's habit of passing the ball rather then shooting, affected the Lakers offense when the team was down by one point and Luke had the chance to score as the timer was running out, instead Luke Walton passed the ball to Kobe Bryant who ran out of time to score. In frustration, Kobe Bryant slammed the ball on the ground as the buzzer sounded. In the preseason of 2004, Luke Walton suffered an injury, he was unable to find a spot in the rotation of Rudy Tomjanovich. However, after Rudy Tomjanovich resigned midway though the season, Luke Walton found a place in the lineup.
Luke Walton is very popular among the crowd in Staples Center. Whenever Luke Walton has the ball, fans tend to serenade with a long "Luuuuuuuuuke" (similar to Michael Cooper and Smush Parker). Music from the Star Wars soundtrack plays usually the beginning of "Throne Room/End Credit" when he scores as he shares the name with the famous character Luke Skywalker of the movie Star Wars. However the truth behind his name is not after the movie character Luke Skywalker, but after his father Bill Walton's good friend Maurice Lucas.
Luke Walton has made appearance in The Young and the Restless, an television soap opera.
