Lakers Head to Seattle Without Injured Bynum
Jan. 14 2008
The struggling Seattle SuperSonics attempt to put the brakes on a six-game losing streak when they welcome the red-hot Los Angeles Lakers tonight to KeyArena. This is the second meeting of the campaign between the clubs. On November 27, superstar Kobe Bryant scored 35 points to lead the Lakers over the Sonics, 106-99, at the Staples Center .
The Lakers have won three in a row over the SuperSonics, and three of four and four of their last six at Seattle . LA enters tonight's contest on a season-best six-game winning streak. On Sunday, Bryant scored 37 points to lift the Lakers to a tough 100-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at the Staples Center . Andrew Bynum, who injured his left knee in the third quarter, finished with 10 points and nine rebounds in the victory, while Lamar Odom collected 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Farmar netted 10 for Los Angeles , which has won four in a row as the host. Andrew Bynum, a major contributor to the revival of the Los Angeles Lakers this season, will miss at least the next two months of the National Basketball Association season with a left knee injury.
The Lakers announced on Monday that an MRI exam showed the center suffered a bone bruise and a left kneecap injury with 8:52 remaining in the third quarter in Sunday's 100-99 home victory over Memphis .
While Bynum, 20, was expected to make a full recovery, he will not be available to the Lakers until at least March 11 if the prognosis is correct.
That would mean the 2.13m center will miss 27 games and have barely a month to work his way back into top shape before the start of the NBA Playoffs.
Bynum, a third-year NBA player, has averaged 13.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots a game.
Bynum jumped to the NBA from high school and was the youngest player ever taken in the NBA Draft. When he played his first NBA game in 2005, Bynum was the youngest player to ever play in an NBA game at 18 years and six days.
The Lakers are a solid 10-6 on the road this season. They will host the Phoenix Suns on Thursday and the Denver Nuggets on January 21st at the Staples Center . The SuperSonics wrap up a two-game homestand this evening. On Friday, reigning MVP Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Mavericks continued their domination of Seattle with a 90-70 win at KeyArena. Wally Szczerbiak scored a team-high 17 points, as the SuperSonics lost their sixth straight and 10th game in 12 tries overall. Nick Collison and rookie phenom Kevin Durant both scored 15 points in defeat. Seattle , which has dropped two in a row at KeyArena, is 5-12 at home this season. After tonight's game, the SuperSonics will embark on a four-game road trip at New Orleans , Memphis , Dallas and Houston .
