Denver has won five straight, but its lead over the seventh-place Lakers is just one-half game. The two are part of a group of five teams - including the eighth-place Clippers, who are two games behind the Lakers - within 4 1/2 games of each other in the race for the final playoff spots in the West.

The Denver Nuggets (40-36) have six games remaining, one more than the Lakers (40-37), who have dropped five of seven.

"I think the sky's the limit for us," said Denver's Allen Iverson, who scored 34 points in Saturday's 96-93 victory over the Clippers. "We can keep that sixth spot if we just concentrate on one game at a time and not look past any teams. These games that we've been winning, we just have to leave them behind, take the positive things and try to carry them over to the next game."

Carmelo Anthony chipped in 23 points in Saturday's win. Iverson scored 17 of his points in the fourth quarter and made a crucial steal in the final seconds that set up his clinching free throws.

Denver was coming off Friday's 75-71 victory over league-leading Dallas - the fewest points the Nuggets have allowed all season.

"It's a good thing that at the end of the season we're concentrating on defense, because that's going to win basketball games for us going into the playoffs," Iverson said. "We understand that we can score points, but our whole thing right now is stopping people on the defensive end and letting the offense come to us."

Denver's winning streak includes a 111-105 road victory over the Lakers last Tuesday. Anthony scored 31 points, Iverson had 20 points and 10 assists and Marcus Camby had 21 points and 20 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have won three of their last four against the Lakers.

Kobe Bryant led Los Angeles with 39 points in that defeat, while Lamar Odom had 17 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists for the team's first triple-double of the season.

Bryant scored 34 more points and added seven assists Sunday, but the Lakers fell 115-107 to the Phoenix Suns.

"There were some players that I thought got disgruntled, and they let some little things distract them out there today," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "When you do that, you can't give a full effort. Those are things you have to play through."

The Lakers have to win all five of their remaining games to match last year's 45-37 record - the worst of any Jackson-coached team.

Center Kwame Brown missed his third game since aggravating a sprained left ankle in a collision with Camby, and won't play on Monday.
