Former real estate developer Gerald Buss is the owner of the Lakers and poker player. Buss was born in 1934 and raised near Kemmerer, Wyoming. He studied at the University of Wyoming where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at age 24 at the University of Southern California (USC). Before becoming a real state developer, Buss taught at USC.
During the 1970s, Gerald Buss forayed into sports ownership by becoming a part owner at various times and various teams in the World of Team Tennis. Today Jerry Buss is notable for owning the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). In 1979, Buss purchased The Forum, a large ranch, the Los Angeles Kings of National Hokey League (NHL), and the Lakers, from Jack Kent Coke. This was the largest transaction in the history of sports with a price tag of $67.5 million dollars. Later, Buss made a deal with Great Western Savings & Loan and as a result came a major advertising agreement for the naming rights of The Forum, changing the name of the building to the "Great Western Forum".
Gerald Buss took charged of operating the league when the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) was formed, the Los Angeles Sparks and the Los Angeles franchise. All three teams eventually moved into the Staples Center, a modern arena located in downtown L.A. that opened in the year of 1999. Gerald Buss sold the Great Western Forum as part of the deal to move the Lakers to the new arena, and the name was reverted to the original "The Forum" name.

Gerald Buss assumed outright ownership of the Los Angeles Sparks, in 2002 when the WNBA was reorganized to grant each team an individual owner, when previously all teams were owned by the NBA.
Jerrys Buss famaily are also very involved with his teams. His son Jimmy Buss is the Lakers assistant general manager, and serves as president of the Sparks. His daughter Jeanie Buss is the Lakers vice president and covers business operations. Jeanie was chastised for posing to Playboy magazine and her romance with Phil Jackson, the Lakers head coach.
For many years now, Jerry Buss has been a high-stakes cash game poker player, and has been more active in tournaments recently. In the World Series in 1991 he finished in 3rd, and in 2003 World Poker Tour invitational he was 2nd place.
